RR7831B GREECE: SALONIKA FEARS THE QUAKE
On 20th June 1978, Salonika, the second largest city in Greece, was hit by a major earthquake whic claimed nearly 50 lives.
The damage could have been worse, but the residents were thrown into panic.
At night, the city is virtually deserted.
Most people are now living outside Salonika or in tents in the parks and squares.
So far, attempts to persuade them to return have not succeeded and the city's economy is badly hit.
Salonika's people it seems are determined to believe their city is about to be hit by another, much bigger, earthquake.
